Introduction

C4EO is building knowledge from a number of sources about how to improve outcomes for children.

The first stage – the Early Years Knowledge Reviews – assessed research evidence and national data on: the impact of disadvantage on outcomes for children;

the potential and practical possibilities for improving children’s learning outcomes through family-based support; the impact of integrated working on children’s development outcomes. The second stage – the identification of validated practice from the sector – is now underway.

The C4EO e-learning themes: Early Years; Disability; Vulnerable Children (particularly children in care); Child Poverty; Safeguarding; Families, Parents and Carers; Schools and Communities.

Welcome to C4EO's e-learning resource on the Early Years – part of our remit to gather and share local, regional and national evidence of what works to improve outcomes in services, especially for the most vulnerable children, young people and families.

It's clear that data plays a critical and fundamental role in helping organisations understand the key issues they face and to decide on the most appropriate strategies to resolve them. The C4EO online data resource provides Information Professionals with a huge range of data from DCSF, DfE and DOH, amongst others and delivers the ability to analyse this data over multiple comparators and geographies using flexible interactive tools.

The site is particularly distinctive in that it enables users to link this data analysis with the most robust research findings and validated local practice to deliver a comprehensive set of potential solutions to the challenges faced in Children's Services. Most significantly the tool will continue to evolve during the life of the project with new data sets being added to mirror the ever-changing requirements and structures of the sector, focusing on delivering effective support and advice to Information Professionals when and where they need it.

Please examine the data and try out the interactive tools on the site and give us your feedback on their coverage and usability – or on any additional data you think would be useful. This feedback will enable us to continue to enhance the support we can give to you as Information Professionals and to continue to build the evidence base for effective early years work for the future.

About C4EO

C4EO's unique remit is to 'gather and share' evidence of what works. The data and research summaries are supplemented by examples of validated local practice. The e-learning tool has been designed to help Information Professionals and others get the most out of this research so we hope that you will find it useful.

Early Years is the first of seven themes explored in this series of e-learning resources and addresses the following priority areas:

  • Narrowing the gap in outcomes for young children through effective practices in the early years.
  • Improving children's attainment through a better quality of family-based support for early learning.
  • Improving development outcomes for children through effective practice in integrating early years services.
